(Review by Sean Conover)

When you say it out loud, the idea of teaming up Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy as newlyweds whose honeymoon goes horribly wrong sounds good. Both are popular from their roles on comedy television shows, yet Murphy is more familiar from her dramatic movie roles. They are both young, pretty, up-and-coming actors who have a knack for comedic timing, and seem a perfect fit for a slapstick comedy with a little romance on the side. The two even reportedly started dating in real life after working with each other on the film, so I guess their attraction to each other in the film should even feel real. All this sounds like a flavorful formula for an enjoyable comedy romance.

Unfortunately, there is a major difference between the descriptions "Comedy Romance" and "Romantic Comedy." The first type should aim to make the audience laugh through a majority of the film, yet has a sweet romantic underbelly throughout. The latter is more of a feel-good film, where the story is more focused on the relationship between the two leads, with a few chuckles thrown in to the script here and there. "Just Married," although seemingly marketed as a Comedy Romance, ends up being more of a Romantic Comedy, but even that doesn't feel like a fitting description.

In "Just Married," we are introduced to Tom Leezak (Kutcher), a sporadic overnight traffic reporter for a Los Angeles radio station. As he laments about his recently disastrous honeymoon, we are taken back (a-la flashback) to when he and Sarah McNerney (Murphy) first met. Over the next 10 minutes, they meet on the beach (after he hits her in the head with a football), fall in love, meet her wealthy parents and family, and get married. It was a quick courtship, but it's just the lead up to the Honeymoon In Europe where the fun is supposed to begin. After trying to join the "Mile High Club" on the flight fails, the rest of the trip goes down hill.

After landing in France, and in one of the funniest sequences of the film, their rental car reservation was unknowingly for a really, really, really compact car. When they finally get to their castle-like hotel, Tom almost burns it down by trying to force an American plug into the European outlet. When they are ousted from the hotel, they travel to Venice, Italy, and the situations continue to grow worse. Tom, who hasn't seen any sports since they left, asks to watch a Dodgers game in an American bar, while Sarah, who was an Art History major in college, heads to see the historical sites. Through all of this, Sarah's ex-boyfriend Peter (Christian Kane) actively pursues her, and this also throws a major crimp in the honeymoon. After a few more confrontations in Venice, the two decide to end their relationship and travel back home, where we are back to Tom lamenting about the honeymoon. Of course, the film doesn't end there, but the comedy for the most part does, and the remainder is textbook romanticism.

As a whole, the film isn't as disappointing as it could have been, yet it is not as amusing as it could have been either. Some of the blame for that would fall squarely on the shoulders of Kutcher. Best known as Kelso from FOX's "That 70's Show," and as Jesse in the inexplicably funny "Dude, Where's My Car?" Ashton seems to hold back in some of the sequences. His slapstick timing is good, but you can see it coming, and he is not the best choice as a romantic lead. There are a few emotional scenes in the film that he does act out very well, but it seems his passion for Murphy may have blossomed after filming wrapped. Either that or he just isn't a very convincing kisser.

Murphy, who voices the ever vigilant and dry witted Luann on FOX's animated "King of the Hill" and was most recently seen in the Eminem vehicle "8 Mile," continues to spread out her choices of roles. Here, she shines in the role of Sarah, playing the rebellious daughter of a rich father who owns the Lakers. Her cocky attitude and passion for Kutcher stand out and is key to Sarah's character. Even her comedic timing is good, and her dry wit is honed like a knife.

Any remaining faults of the film lie in Sam Harper's script. While the pratfalls and mishaps in France and Venice are funny, they are short and far between. By the end of the film, they are gone entirely. The two leads work together well, and a romantic spark is surely there, but again there are times when Kutcher may have been better (and funnier) improving his own lines. Who knows?

"Just Married" starts out as a comedy, but ends up more of a romance, and you're not quite sure how you got there. It is also has the unfortunate "Trailer Curse," where a majority of the humor is shown in the trailer so by the time you see it in the movie, it's not quite as funny as the first ten times you saw them. If you're expecting a lot of laughter, it never comes, yet if you're looking for a lite-hearted Romantic Comedy, "Just Married" may be just the ticket.
