(Review by Sean Conover)
From the trailers alone, you can tell "Sin City" is a different movie, in particular the visuals.
Based on the graphic novels by Frank Miller (who also Co-Directed along with Robert Rodriguez), the movie makes you feel as though you are indeed seeing a comic book brought to life on the big screen. Strictly black and white - with touches of brilliant color to emphasize scenes - the style and look of the film is amazing. From scene to scene, the digital-heavy film casts stark contrasts of shadow and light, casting a look to the star-studded cast that has never been seen before in a feature length movie.
That being said, as far as the actual story goes, the leap from page to screen is not so intriguing. Instead, the Hollywood heavyweights that fill just about every character in the film are almost lost to the voice-over storytelling and choppy plot that just never seems to tie together.
Brilliantly crafted visually, the movie as a whole just doesn't reach the upper echelon of what it could have been, because it is so heavilly rooted in the comic book tone. Brutally violent and dark, funny and interesting, you can't take your eyes off the screen but hopefully you can piece together the story and walk away still enjoying the experience. |
