(Review by Sean Conover)
The guys that write all of those "Dummies" books could utilize "Wicker Park" as the basis for "Stalking for Dummies." Hey, they have “Pregnancy for Dummies,” might as well continue with the series.
The background of the story surrounds Matt (Josh Hartnett) and his girlfriend Lisa, whom he was in love with and had just asked to move in with him, and she suddenly, and without explanation, disappears. While he has moved on with his life (and is even engaged to a co-worker), he has never forgotten Lisa, when he thinks he overhears her in a restaurant, he attempts to track her down. Unfortunately, it's by sneaking around behind her leaving notes, sneaking into her hotel room, and ultimately into her apartment. All the while, not knowing if it is actually Lisa that he is following.
Where the story gets interesting is when he does find Lisa, only it’s not the Lisa he was looking for. But even though it isn’t her, can the new Lisa take the old Lisa’s place?
Harnett plays the pouty, heartbroken man role well, but it's really Mathew Lilliard who entertains the most in the film. As Matt’s best friend Luke, he plays the “normal guy” to Matt’s strange love-driven behavior. In this tale of love stalking, Luke is the only one blinded by love for his new girlfriend, but straight-headed to give his best friend a hard time about how he acts. He delivers quite a few funny one-liners, and is quintessentially more charming than Hartnett is.
The twists and turns of the story keep the film interesting, but at times the situations are a bit unbelievable and far-fetched. It’s an interesting suspense story bookended by a romantic premise, and the fact that the lead characters are unbelievably sexy doesn’t hurt the visuals, either.
