(Review by Sean Conover)
My expectation upon starting to view "13 Going on 30" was that it would be a girlish-knockoff of Tom Hank's Big, but it turned out to be slightly different, and for that, the film stands on its own as being enjoyable. I was surprised, or rather confused, as to whom the target audience was for the movie, because for its rather playful promos and posters, I thought it would be for young girls around the age of 10. But after seeing it, with bra-stuffing, office affairs, and a couple choice colorful words (e.g. "bullsh-t" and "b-tch"), I would caution that this is definitely for a 13-and-up crowd.
That being said, the film is relatively lighthearted, and at times rather funny and touching. While Jennifer Garner doesn't pull off the believability that Hanks did as the child-trapped-in-an-adult's-body, she does capture the youthful attitude and dialogue when the 30-year old is talking with 13-year olds. Not a must-see, but not a bad choice when picking up some movies at the video store for the weekend. |
